Alvin King is a native of Mobile, AL. He started to learn to play the trumpet at the age of 11, as well teaching himself to play the piano at the age of 12. Alvin attended high school at John L. LeFlore where he participated in the marching, concert, and jazz band. He also played in many functions outside of his normal schools activities when the opportunities presented themselves. While still in high school, Alvin became a member of the Youth Community Jazz Ensemble at Bishop State Community College. It was during this 3 year span that Alvin developed his skills as a trumpet player and learned a great deal of musical compositions and how to perform with an artistic approach to Jazz. Alvin reveres the Youth Ensemble and it’s existence as the most influential and beneficial program to any young jazz musician coming up in the Mobile area at that time.

Although Alvin progressed in music on multiples levels, when he graduated high school he decided to attend college at Tuskegee University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. Although Tuskegee did not have a music program, Alvin started to compose music with the help of one of his greatest influences, Mr. Warren L. Duncan the Band Director at Tuskegee University. It was at Tuskegee that Alvin wrote and copyrighted his first original song, “Harmony”, which understandably is the title of his debut released album in 2011.

After completing college, Alvin returned home to start his engineering career. While never losing humus love of music, Alvin played in several brass bands, wedding gigs, and participated in various local jam sessions. His musical influences are Wynton Marsalis, Miles Davis, Clifford Brown, Lee Morgan, etc….Too many to name because he listens to jazz all the time and works on his craft. When Alvin formed his jazz band “The Fifth K’nection” , he set out to perform straight ahead jazz at a high level for the city. Now playing throughout the city of Mobile and surrounding areas private and public events, Alvin still plays for the love and passion of music which has always been in his heart!!!
